Abstract
The tutorial provides fundamental guidelines for the design and assessment of wearable systems for physiological monitoring, integrating complementary expertise from different fields. Focus areas include the relevance of key physiological parameters in clinical settings, healthy and active aging, rehabilitation, and cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Special emphasis is placed on scientific and technological challenges that foster the effective translation of wearable technologies into real-world applications (clinical trials, occupational environments, and daily life).

Program
The tutorial will be divided into two main parts:
  • Lectures session (10:00 – 11:00): introductory talks covering the fundamentals of wearable sensors — design, assessment, and applications in cardiorespiratory and motion monitoring.

    • Daniela Lo Presti — Respiratory monitoring: solutions and applications
  • Practical session (11:00 – 13:00): hands-on demonstrations of the main algorithms used to process wearable raw data and extract physiological parameters relevant to clinical, occupational, and everyday-life contexts.

Tutorial on “Safeguarding Personal Data in Socio-Health Research: A Guide to GDPR and Ethical Compliance”

Abstract
This tutorial provides the essential legal framework for handling personal data in socio-health research scenarios. It covers GDPR and ethical rules and principles to raise awareness of the importance of compliance in research. We clarify what constitutes personal data and special categories of personal data, which legal bases make processing lawful, and which technical and organisational measures can safeguard data subjects’ privacy. The tutorial also addresses the ethical principles underpinning high-integrity socio-health research.

Co-author of national guidelines for open data and semantic interoperability (schema.gov.it). PI/technical manager in EU and national projects and co-founder of BUP, a CNR spin-off in AI.
Program
  • First session (90 minutes): Theoretical foundations of data protection: GDPR requirements for processing health and social data, consent, data subject rights, and the relation between data protection and ethical principles for research integrity.
  • Practical session (30 minutes): How to initiate and structure a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) for high-risk research, with a concrete example to identify risks and define appropriate security measures across the research lifecycle.
